Congratulations to FirstPoint USA client, Cameron Smith, who has committed to a soccer scholarship at Union College, Kentucky. We recently caught up with Cameron to hear why he wished to pursue a sports scholarship in the US, and what he is most looking forward to upon beginning his soccer scholarship.
Cameron has an impressive soccer career behind him so far. The former Balfron High School pupil has played with Milngavie Boys Club, Strathendrick FC, and Blanefield Thistle FC. A few of Cameron’s many soccer achievements include; being awarded Most Improved Player with both Strathendrick FC and Milngavie Boys Club; Top Goal Scorer and Player of the Year with Blanefield Thistle FC; and League Champions with Milngavie Boys Club.
Cameron tells us that studying in the US is something that he has thought about for some time. He saw one of our FirstPoint USA adverts on Facebook and decided that this was something he was interested in. From attending one of our trials, Cameron is now about to join an American university!

However, added, “the process was quite time consuming, but the staff at FirstPoint USA were really helpful throughout the process.”
Deciding which school you wish to attend in the states is a big decision. Cameron tells us that the key factor which influenced his decision to attend Union College was the Head Coach, Jonathon Shaw. Cameron stated, “He really sold it to me. I’d already had a few offers before Union, but when he got in contact with me he was really helpful and seemed to like my style of play. I like the type of team Coach Shaw is building. It’s going to be a good year.”
Upon beginning his life as a student athlete, Cameron tells us that there are many things he is looking forward to over the next few years. However, he is mostly looking forward to heading out to the states and beginning training. Cameron added that he knows it will be difficult to begin with, especially juggling his academics and sports, but states that he is ready for the challenge.
Finally, we asked Cameron where he sees himself in 10 years time. He stated, “Who knows what I’ll be doing in 10 years time! Hopefully, I’ll still be contributing to soccer in some way, but I’m looking forward to whatever lies ahead.”
We would like to wish Cameron the best of luck for his studies and playing career at Union College. We will keep you updated on Cameron’s progress through our various social media platforms; Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn.
