The 39th Ryder Cup Matches were held September 28–30, 2012, at the Medinah Country Club in Medinah, Illinois, United States. Europe went into the match as the cup holders, having defeated the USA by 14½ points to 13½ in the 2010 competition at Celtic Manor Resort, Wales.
USA led 10–6 at the start of the final day's play meaning Europe had to win 8 of the 12 singles matches. Europe’s captain Olazábal went “top heavy” in his team selection which paid off as Luke Donald, the superb Ian Poulter, World number 1 Rory McIIroy (who nearly missed his tee-off time getting mixed up with time zones!), Justin Rose and Paul Lawrie all won the first 5 singles matches for Europe. Sergio Garcia and Lee Westwood followed up with wins meaning Europe just had to win one more match. That match came when the German Martin Kaymer held his nerve to sink a 5 foot put on the 18th meaning Europe retained the trophy. Europe won the match overall when Tiger Woods sportingly gave Italian Francesco Molinari “a gimmie” halved match earning both players 1/2 points for their team.
The 14½ points to 13½ victory for Europe secured the Ryder Cup for the fifth time in the last six contests. The comeback emulated that made by the USA in 1999 when they also overturned a four-point deficit on the final day to win the cup and was the largest comeback by a European side in the history of the competition. Europes captain Olazábal dedicated the victory to the late great Seve Ballesteros.
The next Ryder cup (in 2014) will be held in Gleneagles, Scotland.
